New Show at Living Arts Gallery in Hawi

Off to The Living ARTS Gallery in Hawi for the show "Island Landmarks" coming up next month - visit, it's a wonderful place with friendly people and lots of good art:

Kahalu'u Calm - 14x11 - plein air oils

I really love this little beach but especially the life guard shack (yeah - I loved them in Joisey too) - the chinese red displayed against any color is outstanding!!  and these people are just a bunch of happy paint blobs (well - I think they look happy).

New Work Showing

I've replaced nearly all of my work at the Kailua-town Kailua Village Artists' Gallery, across from the Kona Inn in the Kona Market Place.  Reception this Friday - april 11th - 4p to 7p, please come by.

A Very SKOILY Couple of Days

I've been painting these SKOILS=SKetches in OILS for a while - just some 45 minute quickies - 6x9 on loose canvas for the convenience.  These first two done with the West Hawaii Plein Air Painters on Friday's session at Kealakekua Bay

Lavern

Finally photographed some of the paintings i finished last week - will post them later. this one painted with the WHPAP at that little park at the inlet to Honokohau Harbor last Friday. Unearthly color always here first thing in the morning. Caught Lavern on her way into the office - she's bigger then i thought.  - knifed in the rocks on this one:

Lavern is the eight foot tiger shark that hangs around the Honokohau small boat marina - she was being hasseled a few weeks ago by some neandrathal kids and made it to YouTube.

More Skoils for you?

SKOILS are SKetches in OILS, painted in one go (ala prima) and completed in about 45 minutes on loose canvas - 6x9 size (because that's half of a full sheet of loose canvas).  Here are some:

Another painting session with the West Hawaii Plein Air Painters - this one turned out to be a tailgate party and we had two guest painters show up, neither of us knowing the other was going to be there.  Nice when that happens.

Out solo on this one - in the mornings the grass out here between the National Energy Lab and Queen K glows with some kind of inner light - didn't get it this time - maybe next  . . .

One of my favorites, stylistically and tempermentally - easy to understand and listen to and dedicated to the fine points of plein air and quick fresh studio work as well.  He also has a newsletter service and some "private" free lessons that you can participate in as well as a free e-book that i'll give you the address for later.

Paul Taggard
I love this guy and admire his perserverance and doggedness and hate his perserverence and doggedness!! And/but he explains things clearly and over and over again so that you can't help but eventually "get it".  His instruction videos are "all media" so just take your choice and settle in for a real "journey".

Kaloko Ponds

Painting from two weeks ago session at Kaloko Ponds, one of my favorite places to paint - a short drive from the studio to kealekehe parkway, take the jeep out of gear, and coast down to queen k.  The entrance's tough if you don't know where it is - turn makai where you see the backside of a stopsign where the yellow hatch marks scar the pavement before the costco stop light - very convenient and lots of shade out there.

I haven't entered the coffee festival competition for a few years but this year thought I'd give it a try.  A new look for kona coffee and for the festival - we'll see.  The big party isn't until november i think.

Throughness - what's behind the patterns

A concept i've been thinking about for years and thought i'd lost sight of - so i went through a lot of the stuff that hasn't seen the light of day for decades and put this montage together.  Turn up the sound and enjoy (there's a full screen button in the lower right corner - please use it).

Still Life and Dappling

Still life at Honl Bay - 9x12 - oils on board

This was painted only a few days after “the excitement”, which is to say the tsunami.  The waves had set up this little still life and raked the sea grass into an interesting tangle.  Here I had my new colors (Gamblin professional oils rather than the student grade stuff that they sell at Ace Hardware) working well and I even managed to stifle my inclinations and tone down the far away palms.

A lot of vibrant brushwork going in here and some wonderful dappling effects in the colorful shadows.

5x7 Quickies

Gussie's Hammock - Keauhou Bay - 7x5 - oils on board

Wanted to do some little quickies to see how they sell and just to unlimber into these new paints.  Each one took about 50 years and 45 minutes (50 years of iving experience and 45 minutes of real painting time).  I hope they look like they were as much fun as they were to do.

We go to Gussie Pace's estate at Keauhou Bay sometimes for a painting session and this is her hammock with the bay in the background – the next one is her concrete pond – it somehow just reminded me of Beverly Hillbilies.
