Abstract?

I've always been rather disdainful of abstract paintings and photography in general, but the other day I came across some photos that would have knocked my socks off (if I had any on, of course) by a really fine photographer named Mary Mansey (find her here: Mary Mansey) - so - i had to try it:

First Stage:  the ocean floor

AND IT WAS LOTS AND LOTS OF FUNNNNNNN!!! 

It didn't have to look like anything and it was just like kindergarten all over again - hahahahaha - I'm going to do lots more of them!

Practicing with a Plastic Crutch

Nice title, eh?

I don't do this very often - probably not often enough, but I was hesitant about painting a lot of foam on top of what was a pretty complicated piece of deep ocean - easy enough to do a wipe, but that never leaves the underlying painting as fresh and clean as it was - so . . . I used a clear piece of plastic sheet for practice.  Here I used one of those clear envelopes that we use to protect prints for sale:

Of course the problem was I really liked the plastic sketch and as far as part of my mind was concerned (there's not that much left) I had finished the painting and it was time to go on to another one.  Months later (two days ago) I finally got it done:

and I like it better!

New Studio Work - Stage One

Starting with a yellow ground ("summer squash" exterior enamel) on loose canvas I applied color with a brush and wiped back to the yellow with a cotton rag to give a resemblance (dare I say "Impression"?) of the sea bottom - there are some drippy green things in the upper left hand corner that I'll call "sea weed" and I'll call that long ropy thing a piece of hose. Next stage is glazing to develop the color of the water, and then the application of opaque color to describe the top interface of the water - fun.

New Show at Living Arts Gallery in Hawi

Off to The Living ARTS Gallery in Hawi for the show "Island Landmarks" coming up next month - visit, it's a wonderful place with friendly people and lots of good art:

I really love this little beach but especially the life guard shack (yeah - I loved them in Joisey too) - the chinese red displayed against any color is outstanding!!  and these people are just a bunch of happy paint blobs (well - I think they look happy).

A Very SKOILY Couple of Days

I've been painting these SKOILS=SKetches in OILS for a while - just some 45 minute quickies - 6x9 on loose canvas for the convenience.  These first two done with the West Hawaii Plein Air Painters on Friday's session at Kealakekua Bay

CURSES . . . SKOILED AGAIN ! ! !

Two from last night. This first a memory from a squall I noticed late in the afternoon - unusual because it was done on white canvas:

Lavern

Finally photographed some of the paintings i finished last week - will post them later. this one painted with the WHPAP at that little park at the inlet to Honokohau Harbor last Friday. Unearthly color always here first thing in the morning. Caught Lavern on her way into the office - she's bigger then i thought.  - knifed in the rocks on this one:

Lavern is the eight foot tiger shark that hangs around the Honokohau small boat marina - she was being hasseled a few weeks ago by some neandrathal kids and made it to YouTube.

Another painting session with the West Hawaii Plein Air Painters - this one turned out to be a tailgate party and we had two guest painters show up, neither of us knowing the other was going to be there.  Nice when that happens.

Out solo on this one - in the mornings the grass out here between the National Energy Lab and Queen K glows with some kind of inner light - didn't get it this time - maybe next  . . .

SKOILS - sketches in oils

I'm developing some quick oils sketching techniques -  I've done a few - usually about 45 minutes long - hope you like them.   SKOILS are SKetches in OILS, painted in one go (ala prima) and completed in about 45 minutes on loose canvas - 9x12 size (because that's half of a full sheet of loose canvas).

Nice to have a day with some sky character - usually we're stuck painting that beautiful clear blue tropical stuff.  With the skoils my palette is three warm primary colors and three cool primaries with white and black (which i haven't yet seen the need for - the black, that is).  Not a perfect touristy type day, light dusting of rain, grey to dark sky, and a sea as calm as glass.  Wonderful day with 6 others and no one expected the pastel contingent to show up.

I haven't entered the coffee festival competition for a few years but this year thought I'd give it a try.  A new look for kona coffee and for the festival - we'll see.  The big party isn't until november i think.
