My Old Office at the Kona Inn - 7x5 - Watercolors and watercolor pencils

Decided to PAINT OUT THERE yesterday at two of my favorite close in spots - The Kona Inn and Magic Sands. I used to have an Office (put that in italics) at the Tower at the Kona Inn (upper painting) - I had the second, third, and fourth floors - each of which was about a 12' x 12' square - but the top floor, where I had my drafting set-up, had a walkway all the way around with spectacular views - even a view of the pier where they used to bring in each day's game catch to weigh.

" Dorion's" at Magic Sands Beach - 7x5 - Watercolors and watercolor pencils

Not much sand here at Magic Sand beach after the high surf from last week. I remember this restaurant used to be called "Dorion's" owned by the best one-armed bartendar on the Island - but then that was back in the "one-stop-light" days in Kona.

These are both Water Color Pencils and Water Colors - I'm trying to find a way to use water colors the way I like to use oils and I think I've succeeded.

Easy Day at Kona Village - 11x14 - Oils on stretched canvas
Unhappy with my typically blue shadows, I thought I'd try an earthy-red look - don't think I like it - will be experimenting with my new purple later - like the palms and - look - people and buildings!

Bright Day @ Anaeho'omalu - 11x14 - Oils on canvas board
The sun was so bright that I could hardly look at this scene from my vantage point in the shade, but yellow just wasn't hot enough to bring it off - I think this cad red did. You also might notice that I'd bought a tube of purple which i used liberally in the clouds and espectially the driftwood. I really like the blobs of color on the wood to show highlights through the shadow covering and the way people and boats on the far beach are shown only as an impression of activity.

A change in direction with my paintings not just beccause of a Darrel Hill workshop, but also because it's time had come. I've kind of adopted a "no fear" attitude about color:

2 Steps Beach Shack - 11x14 Oils - stretched canvas

I began painting on a yellow ground and sketching in the "road map" of the drawing in cadmium red light about two years ago. With wanton not-painting of some areas of the surface and some wiping, this allows the yellow ground and the under-sketching to show through to create some exciting complimentary color optical disturbances to happen with the predominantly green and blue subject. I've also begun painting buildings (what's next? people?) and I like the way they give presence to the subject and offer some hard-edged contrapuntal to the soft landscape forms.

Ali'i Gardens Marketplace - "pink" - 10x8 - Oils on board
I love this marketplace - the vendors and the surroundings are colorful and friendly. I think this was probably the beginning of my "no fear color, eh?" stage. The shadows and everything weren't really green, but that color makes a fine contrast with the pink of the table cloths and the warmth of the umbrellas.
